Description of Course:
The emphasis of the class is on college preparation for students who are interested in furthering their music study. The music theory course will deal with the elements of music study such as notation, harmony, rhythm, ear training, music history, basic composition, form and analysis, and if time allows music history of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic time periods. We’re also going to have a lot of fun!

Notebook

Unit 1:
The staff, notes and pitches.
Treble Clef and Staff
The Bass clef and Staff,
The Grand Staff and Ledger Lines.
Ear Training for these 4 lessons
Unit 2:
Note values,
Measure, Bar Line and Double Bar,
4/4 time signature and Note Values
Whole, Half and Quarter Rests
Ear Training for these 4 lessons
Unit 3:
2/4 Time Signatures
¾ Time Signatures
Dotted Half Note

The course teaches the rudiments and terminology of music notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords, metric
organizations and rhythm patterns.
The course teaches realization and composition of bass lines.
The course teaches functional triadic harmony in traditional four part texture vs triadic harmony.
The course teaches tonal relationships.
The course includes realization of a Roman numeral progression.
The course teaches phrase structure.
The course teaches analysis of music.
The course teaches small forms of music.
The course teaches modulations to closely related keys.
Musical skills are developed though sight singing.
Musical skills are developed through the use of written exercises.
Musical skills are developed through listening.
Musical skills are developed through analytical exercises.
